Pastoral Letter

June 2010

My Dear Friends,

I am sure you can remember the old hymn that goes “ Summer suns are glowing over land and sea; Happy light is flowing bountiful and free, Everything rejoices in the mellow rays; All earth’s thousand voices swell the psalm of praise
It is great in summer time to feel the warmth and have the long light nights. I am sure after the long winter and a few unseasonal blips we are glad to have summer here.

At this time of year, people travel to different places and I am sure it is good to take an opportunity to be a visitor somewhere else and to worship among strangers. It is a time when we also have some visitors come into our worship services and I hope we will make them feel welcome.

I always find it good to be a visitor and enjoy being part of worship with no expectation to lead. I call this having a punter’s view of worship.

The Summer is a time to recharge the life within and to refocus our vision for God and His work. Here at Trinity we each need to ask some serious questions about ourselves and what we see as the future of God’s work here. It may well be the case that we really don’t care, but it is important to realise how we can easily lose that which is precious. I have been struck in our Presbytery to see congregations which think their future is under threat rolling up selves and working hard to ensure that won’t happen. I hope Trinity and it’s people will equally roll up selves and work hard, otherwise we may lose that which we are in danger of taking for granted!

We are involving the support of Steve Aishorp the Regional Organiser for Mission to be an enabler for the Church here as we seek to honour God. I do hope all who want Trinity to have a place in this community will rise to the challenge. As I said recently the Bible says Fight the good fight, well to do that we need to have something worth fighting for.

If office bearers are complacent or indifferent then how can we expect the membership to act differently?

Yours in His Service
Alistair Murray

Kirk Session

We celebrated Communion on 25th April when 102 members communicated and we were delighted to welcome 1 visitor at this time.

At the March meeting of Kirk Session 18 Elders and Parish Assistant were in attendance and apologies were received from 8 Elders. It is proposed to hold Elder Training Evenings June, October and November.  These will be evening training events for Elders and prospective Elders.  An Elder/Congregational conference is being investigated to discuss the Future and how the whole Congregation can be supported by the Leadership.  This conference will be held on Saturday 18th September, 2010 and will be led by Mr Steve Aisthorpe, Church of Scotland Development Officer for this area.  Mr Aisthorpe has suggested that Training be held at another venue.  After considerable discussion over two Session Meetings with regard to the decreasing number attending the 5.15pm Communion it was agreed that the 5.15pm Communion be dispensed with after the April Communion and be replaced with a combined Communion Service and Thanksgiving Service at 6.30pm.  This would start at the June 2010 Communion Service for a trial period of one year. Rev. Murray has responded to Priority Areas Committee request that we consider Bereavement Support training in Inverness.  Priority Areas Council has indicated that they are willing to have a Listening & Bereavement Training Event.  The Course details appear elsewhere in this newsletter.  Rev. Murray encouraged members to host the event and to be supportive of the event.  The Kirk Session agreed that this event be opened to those in the congregation that would benefit from attending this type of course.    Rev. Murray has requested that Trinity Church be included in all Priority Areas discussions with regard to thesubject “One Building with a Hundred uses”.  This could have importance in the future.

Life experience enables people in Priority Areas to offer support to others when they are grieving, whether it be the death of a family member or friend, divorce, trauma; wherever there is loss, there is grief.

People in Priority Areas already have a natural ability to get along side others in need. This programme builds on a person’s existing experience and enables them to act more confidently when helping others.

  Course is 4 Sessios

  Session 1.  Introductions
Session  2. Participants examine their own bereavement
Session  3. Share models of the normal grieving process
Session  4.  Are you ready to help others?

The Training will be under the Tom Allen Centre training umbrella and as such, course materials will be taken from current COSCA materials for counselling training.

If interested speak to Heidi or the Minister.

EXTRACT FROM REV. ALISTAIR MURRAY’S REPORT AT THE ANNUAL STATED MEETING OF TRINITY CHURCH 10 MARCH 2010

Rev Alistair Murray commenced his report by reflecting on the joys and sorrows the achievements and failures of the past year. He expressed his appreciation to the Office Bearers and Congregation for their kindness and support and recognising his 25 years in the Ministry and how glad he was to see some people from his two previous charges in Ayr and Aberdeen joining in the celebrations.

Rev Murray stated that as the Parish Minister his responsibility is the Parish and therefore while its nice that we call him our Minister, he is not actually our Minister, he is the Minister appointed by the Presbytery that serves the Parish which takes in an area known as the Merkinch which is a Priority Area. This means that lots of his time is spent with people who never darken the door of the Church for one reason or another. However, he does not make judgements on them - he comes and ministers to them in Christ’s name in the hope that the seeds that he puts out will be planted and will bear fruit in the hope that they will come to know God in a real and living way. - the way in which we ,as the people of God, have faith and belief and therefore as the Parish Minister it means that he can only be stretched so much, however he tries as much as he can to be there for people.

He expressed his appreciation to Heidi for her help and support and stated how good it was to have someone you can turn to and trust and rely on. He recalled, with humour, the Service on Valentines day, when each member had to pass the little red heart, which was handed out at the start of the Service, to someone unknown to them - nobody passed him a red heart, however he stated he took comfort in the fact that he is well known — just as he knows all of us! He then reminded the meeting of the Blue Christmas Service, for people who had suffered bereavement. Approximately 60 people attended the service. Some of them spoke of their fear and trepidation in attending such a Service, but then spoke of their gladness and comfort it had given them. These are some of the little things that are there to encourage us and enable us to see what we can do to help others.

On a recent visit to Bankfoot in Perth where he attended a Conference concerning the "New Emerging Church” which is happening within the Church of Scotland, he visited the new Church and Centre which replaced the old Church which burnt down some 5/6 years ago The frame of the old Church is still there as a testament perhaps to the past. The present minister told how he took comfort from the fact that when the old Church was in the centre of the village on the hill, hardly anybody came. But since the new Church was built at the edge of the Community, people are attending not only on a Sunday but throughout the week for all the various activities which go on at the Centre. So what appeared to be something of despair has become an opportunity — and so we should not despair because God is at work
At present both he and Heidi are attending a course entitled "Mission Shaped Minist:ry” at Hilton Church. The Church has this vision that we don’t necessary need to have a Church building but we can work within the Parish and try to find ways to relate to people within the Parish and
Community. He recalled that at a recent Youth Convention in the High School one of the teachers remarked that the Youth Worker there was a "God Send" - believing that God had sent him to that place and he stated that he believes that God had sent him and Heidi to Trinity.

He told the members present that he believes they too have a role to play within the  Church and it is important that we see our role and seek to play that role. Many within the Congregation have various "hats” to wear, however he hoped that anyone who wants to play would not be turned away and will not be made to feel that they do not have a part in Church life, because they do have a part - we all have a part to play each and everyone and if ever anyone is made to feel uncomfortable, he would like to be informed as the Church is a place we should all feel welcome and at home - it is important that we all work together — not for our own glory — not for his glory, but for God ’s glory and honour in this place
He then thanked the Office Bearers, Conveners and their Committees and the people of the Church for their support and for the part we all play, no matter how small, in the life of the Church. He hopes and prays that as we go into 2010 and look at what God has done — we must also look to the future in the knowledge as to what God can do. As they say - yesterday is history, tomorrow is a dream, today is reality — so it is most important that we all play our part. Let us begin to see the things that we have — we have a minibus and lots of times it is just sitting parked out there so let us make the best and maximum of what we are doing here. There are discussions
within the Church of Scotland on "one building" - discussions which have taken place between the Priority areas and the Church of England and Church of  Scotland on how we can make one building have a hundred uses which will mean a change in lots of ways. Change is uncomfortable, especially as we get older. Change is important and it must and will happen and we must play our part within it. Let us not lose heart or lose hope but let us seize the moment - see the opportunity, because this moment and opportunity may pass us by and then we have a life of regret and grief.  We all know the stages of grief - people are sad, then become angry and then become anxious - we don’t want that within our Church. We want a Church that is more wise and willing and able and seeking ways in which we can take some of the things that we have been doing for a long time and other things that we have never done and mix them all together and begin to create and ensure that the Church moves forward. He stated that there are lots of things that get him down — wear him down — there’s nothing worse than people sometimes - but let us not lose heart - let us build and move on and seize the moment and opportunity under God.

Rev Murray concluded his report by stating that he is most appreciative and grateful to all and he is sometimes moved to tears at the energy and enthusiasm of people — sometimes aware and sometimes not of the deeds carried out and he prayed that God would bless each and everyone in 2010

3rd Inverness Girls' Brigade

MOTTO: "Seek, Serve and Follow Christ"

The Explorers continued their theme of “Things”.  Soft things meant the girls made sock puppets and cotton wool sheep and played games with teddies.  Marshmallows were a favourite soft thing and the girls had to eat different marshmallows without getting their faces dirty, which was a real challenge!!  The final topic was Hard Things and the girls looked at the Story of David and Goliath and the 2 house builders.  The girls had lots of fun with marbles, which were determined to escape, and they made up their own prayer to ask for help with things they find difficult.
On Saturday 8th May, Trinity Church played host to one of four Explorer Hawaiian Theme Days taking place over Scotland.  Around 40 P1-P3 girls enjoyed making grass skirts, Limbo dancing, Hawaiian dancing and making fruit juice cocktails.  The ball pit game and the GB shop also proved very popular.  Everyone involved in the day had such a great time they didn’t want to go home!!
The Junior Section continued studying “Indoor and Outdoor Safety” and “Dancing”.  They looked for hazards in the home and made suggestions to make things safer.  Mrs. Hazel MacDonald, our Divisional Commissioner and GB Officer at Ness Bank, very kindly came along to teach the Juniors the “Flying Scotsman” dance.  The girls really enjoyed this dance and performed it at Parents’ Evening.
3 Juniors took part in the National Junior Competition in Dundee on Saturday 27th March.  Along with teams from all over Scotland the girls completed 11 games stations and several puzzle sheets.  Unfortunately no winning place this year, but the girls had a great day.  Another 3 Juniors took part in the Divisional Junior Camp at Findhorn at the end of April.  It was a really good weekend with 18 girls from Inverness, Kyle and Glenelg enjoying lots of activities including swimming, ice skating, crafts and a “Girls’ Brigade’s Got Talent” show.
The Brigaders studied “Christian Musicals” with “Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” being the favourite.  The weekly badminton games continued to be quite competitive and with an invisible net, things were quite interesting!!
Kirsty has completed her Leadership 1 course and Amy her Leadership 3.  A huge “Well done” to both girls.   Amy and Kirsty have also completed their practice hike as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.  The real hike is due to take place at the beginning of July. Good luck wishes to all taking part that weekend.
The annual Divisional Service was held on Sunday 21st March at East Church.  It was a lovely service and there was a good turn out of girls.  After the service, as part of GB Connect, 2 members of the Scottish GB Executive came to speak to the Highland officers and gauge their opinions on different topics. This ranged from possible changes to the uniform to how to recruit more girls and leaders to GB.  This project is happening all over the country as part of improving communication between GB headquarters and individual companies and divisions.
This year the annual Divisional Fraser Trophy Competition was to write a poem, song or rap about GB and the Highlands.  The whole company contributed to the Trinity entry.  Unfortunately we didn’t win but the girls made up a great song to the tune of Highland Cathedral.
Highland Division is hosting the National AGM on Saturday 18th September this year.  We are looking for volunteers to help steward the event.  If you would be available to help on the evening of Friday 17th or any time on the Saturday then please speak to Ann, Alison or Elaine for more details.

Date for your Diary  Monday 6th September 2010 – GB’s restart. Welcoming current members and looking for new members for each section.

The Boys’ Brigade     6th / 7th Inverness Company

The Company has closed in all sections for the summer.

At the Anchor Section closing Mrs Ann Murray, having announced she was standing down as Officer in Charge, was thanked for her work over the last three sessions.

At the Junior and Company Closing, the Chief Guest was Supt. Philip Macrae, a former member of the Company. Philip has just returned to the city on his promotion and hopes to help us once he has completed moving his household.

We also thanked Mr Ian Wilson who has been with the Junior Section for the last few weeks of the session.

Two Boys from the Company Section Sgt. Robert Taylor and Cpl. Fraser Hendrie received their Presidents’ Badges from Supt Macrae at the awards night. Both they and Sgt. Alan Mackay have also been helping Jimmy in the Juniors for the Service element of their award work.

At the Maggies event this year Mr Ian Macleod joined the team servicing the Abriachan water station and his help was gratefully appreciated.

Mr Ken Ross did his cricket session again and this was enjoyed by the Boys, the Junior Section had a visit from the Community police officers at the end of the session. They have promised a return visit and hope to do a drugs awareness session with the Boys

We will be closed now until September when we will be enrolling for session 2010 – 2011. We have a couple of folk who are interested in helping us part time and the new BB development officer has been touring schools with the result there have been some new and old faces through the door in the last month. It is to be hoped that this interest is maintained to help increase our numbers

There is still a supply of the Centenary badge available and I am aware that not everyone has had a chance to get one if you would like one please see one of the Officers.

AFTER CHURCH TEAS

Once again many thanks to all the ladies (and gentlemen) involved in teas. Special thanks to Calum and Chrissie MacAulay for their kind donations of tea and biscuits. Chrissie has not been in the best of health recently and we wish her a speedy recovery. Also thanks to Mrs Nan Davidson for the rolls and sandwiches which are going down a treat.

Norman and Linda MacDonald will be overseeing the teas during July and August. The new rota will commence in September and anyone willing to be involved please speak to Norman or myself

On a very happy note - Congratulations from Trinity Church Congregation to Harry and Cath Abbott’s daughter Brenda Margaret . . . on the occasion of her Ordination into the ministry in the Episcopalian Church, to be held in Guildford Cathedral on 4 July. Due to health problems Harry and Cath are unable to travel to the ceremony but all the family will be there, including their daughter Catherine and her husband who are travelling over from New Zealand. Our prayers and thoughts go to Harry and Cath who will be at home, quietly but proudly celebrating Brenda’s important day.        ‘God bless’
